Water Boards ensure our feet stay dry, and that water remains clean and inviting. For residents and companies, farming and nature. The Velt & Vecht Water Board carries out these tasks in Southeast Drenthe and Northeast Overijssel.
Water Boards treat water. For their customers’ health and for the health of the plants and animals in and around the water. The water used at home, e.g. for showering, doing a wash or flushing the toilet, eventually ends up in sewage treatment plants. This is where dirty waste water is treated.
Excess water is drained off via ditches, streams, canals and rivers. This is especially necessary if it rains heavily. We combat flooding using ditches and canals that can drain the water off quickly, and also streams, ponds and rivers that are able to ‘store’ lots of water. Barriers hold the water back and special areas ‘catch’ the excess water.
Water has various functions. Farmers consider it essential, for example, that groundwater levels are constant so that fields do not dry out or get too wet. We can influence this level using surface water. Enabling us to ensure good farmland. Conservation areas flourish with higher groundwater levels, and we also take this into account. And we give nature a helping hand with the eco-friendly layout of our ‘water courses’.
